Buffett declared that he would spend more than 80 percent of his money to foundations that support charitable causes. In 2020, Buffett increased that number to 99 percent. The primary beneficiary was the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which was founded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his then wife, Melinda--which dealt with issues of global education and health; Bill and Buffett have maintained a close bond since the 1990s. The three Buffett children, as well as the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation (named after his wife) were among those who were the recipients of donations. They were concerned with women's reproductive rights, funded college scholarships, and additional charities. The Giving Pledge was an invitation for wealthy individuals to donate a significant portion of their wealth to charities established by Buffett and Gates in 2010.
